Tourist arrivals declined – Maldives

According to the Ministry of Tourism, 10.5 percent reduced when compared to same period last year. About 282,518 tourists visited Maldives by end of May this year. Ministry statistics indicate tourist arrivals in May this year dropped by 11.5 percent when compared to in May last year. In May this year, 43,154 tourists arrived in Maldives while in May 2008, tourist arrivals were 48,764.

According to World Tourism Organization (WTO) there was an 8 percent reduction in global tourism in the first 2 months (February and March) of 2009. Global economic downturn and the A1H1N1 influenza have had devastating impacts on global tourism industry with an anticipated reduction of 2-3 percent by the end of this year.

Island Aviation Services (IAS) ticketing office 0f Maldivian decided to opened for business on Fridays from 1600 hours till 2000 hours .

The airlines Assistant Director said the decision is to provide convenience of the traveling public with the objective of offering better and wider services. Now traveling on Maldivian has increased significantly.

Now Maldivian operates 14 flights to Trivandrum / Indian and 5 flights to Colombo / Sri Lanka daily. Flights to these countries were a huge success with demand increasing by the day, especially to India.

In order to cater for heavy passenger demand, Maldivian schedules extra flights when need arise. In this regard the airline recently operated additional flights to India during the recent school holidays

On going screening for swine flue – Maldives.

Ministry of Health said that working hard to prevent an outbreak of swine flue, A H1N1 influenza, in Maldives.

According to Ministry, over 79,000 passengers arriving Maldives via sea and air were screened for the swine flue and so far no one has been tested positive for symptoms.

Ministry of Health has advised to take precaution measures to prevent from swine flue, especially who travelling abroad.

Showcasing Maldives at Monarch Beach

The High Commission of Maldives and the Maldives Tourism Promotion Board will be showcasing the Maldives at the Monarch Beach festival in Birmingham on Saturday, 15 August 2009 from 1100 hrs to 1800 hrs in Chamberlain Square, Birmingham city centre.

The event would be used to promote Maldivian tourism and culture to attract visitors from the UK. A taste of Maldivian culture will be portrayed through Bodu Beru gigs (traditional drums), and typical Maldivian games such as Ovvalhu gondi, Thinhama, Fas oh’, and Faiga thalhaa. Maldives information guides and literature about tourism in the Maldives will be distributed and visitors will be able to enjoy Dhivehi language and Bodu Beru lessons.

Popular Maldivian rock band, “FasyLive ” will perform along with eminent Bodu Beru artists at the Monarch Beach Festival

British Airways to fly to Maldives

British Airways would start flights to Maldives during the last week of October; Minister of Civil Aviation, said speaking at the ceremony to sign MOUs on joint air services agreements between Maldives and UK.

The main objective of the MOU is to revise the agreement between UK and Maldives on 20 January 1996, to designate British Airways as the authorized career between Maldives and UK and to provide more opportunities for the airlines of both countries.

The objective of MOU is to strengthen the aviation relations between two countries and to encourage more flights between UK and Maldives. British Airways would start operations during the last week of October but as you know it is not a good time economically and financially. This may result in the arrival of other airlines as well.

The main points of the MOUs were unrestricted amounts of flights to operate between Male and airports other than Gatwick and Heathrow, while operating 7 flights from Heathrow and Gatwick per week. The agreement would also allow the airlines designated by the Maldives to obtain 2 points in Europe and South Asia and one point in gulf region as fifth freedom intermediate points and 2 points in Europe as fifth freedom beyond points, and to allow the airlines designated by the UK to obtain 2 points in Europe and South Asia and one point in gulf region as fifth freedom intermediate points 2 points in Europe as fifth freedom beyond points, and to designate British Airways as the airline designated by UK to travel between Maldives and UK.

British Airlines would operate Boeing 777 flights three times a week from Gatwick to Male and first, business and economy class seats would be available in the flights.

Maldives Cabinet has decided to hold Asia’s first Beach and Water sports tournament in Maldives. The tournament is intended to be held in 2010. The decision was made at the cabinet meeting held on 9th May 2009. This paper proposed by the Ministry of Human Recourses, Youth and Sports.

The hosting this event would be an opportunity for the Maldives to promote its tourism as well as to promote sports tourism in the Maldives.
